This week’s episode of No Magic Pill is a little different: Blake is not the host, he is the guest. Blake sat down with his good friend Ariane de Bonvoisin, host of The Spirit Collective Podcast, for a conversation about his mental health journey, his recovery, and his spiritual life, and he loved it so much that he decided to share the interview here in full.
It is one of the most personal conversations of the season. Blake reflects on the lifelong feeling of not being enough that drove his success, the depression that followed selling TOMS, and the journey that ultimately helped him build a life from a place of wholeness rather than lack: merging business with spirituality, learning to slow down and listen, approaching plant medicine with care, and the story behind the Enough bracelet he now wants the whole world wearing.
Ariane opens with Blake’s TEDx talk, the Enough bracelet on her own wrist, and a question that sets the tone: what word do you use for life, God, the universe, source, consciousness? For Blake they are all interchangeable, and his favorite is the Hebrew word for breath, because sometimes reconnecting to spirit really is as simple as one deep breath. Ariane calls the breath the elevator from the head to the heart, and Blake points to one of his favorite books on the subject, Rob Bell’s Everything Is Spiritual.
Ariane read a rare sentence on Blake’s website, that through every venture he has remained guided by spiritual principles, and asks how he actually merges the two. Blake’s answer: he doesn’t distinguish. His life is one life, entrepreneurship is the talent he was given, and every company reflects where he is spiritually, from TOMS at 29, when he stopped wanting to just make money and started wanting to make an impact, to the mental health work of today. He believes the one-for-one idea belonged to the universe and he was simply the antenna that caught it, and he shares the lunch with Whole Foods founder John Mackey that shaped everything: the consciousness of a business can only be at the height of the consciousness of its leader, so if you want a higher-purpose business, work on yourself.
Asked what he wishes every founder knew before their own dark night of the soul, Blake does not hesitate: it will never be enough. No amount of success, no perfect relationship, no house on the beach is designed to make you feel whole, and accomplishing everything you thought would fix you is supposed to fail you, because that failure is the invitation to look inward. He describes the despair of having helped a hundred million kids get shoes, made money, built a beautiful family, and still wanting not to be here, and how that seven-year dark night led him to the self-love and self-compassion that were quietly waiting to be discovered. It is why, turning 50 this year, he says getting older is the jam.
For the listener who believes in Blake but is not sure about the other stuff, he keeps it practical. Everything is already inside you; meditation, retreats, even the medicine only clear away what blocks your inner truth. So start by getting off your screens, into nature, and listening for the breadcrumbs: what is bothering you, what is inspiring you, what is keeping you up. Good teachers and books help, and alongside Rob Bell he names his all-time favorite, Awareness by Anthony de Mello, the book that taught him what real love is. He is honest about the traps too, from spiritual materialism to the optimization treadmill, and offers a counterintuitive picture of growth: five straight vacation days in a hammock reading a John Grisham legal thriller, purely for the joy of it, as an act of self-compassion an overachiever could not have managed a decade ago.
On plant medicine, Blake is both open and careful. The medicine can be an ally if your goal is connection to your highest self, but anything hard it shows you is already in your life, in your tissues, your anxiety, your habits; the medicine just exposes it, and that exposure is a gift. He is emphatic about the progressive path: set and setting matter enormously, and he would never start anyone with ayahuasca. From there the conversation turns to family: getting a caravan of vacationing kids to meditate, prayer as a way of imagining and calling in the life you want, the lucky-person mantra he says with his kids on the way to school, and Garth Brooks’ reminder to thank God for unanswered prayers. What he prays for these days is daily harmony, a word he now prefers to balance.
Blake shares what two marriages and two divorces taught him: a committed relationship exposes every place you have not done the deep work, which makes it one of the hardest things in the world and one of the greatest gifts. He tells the origin story of the Enough bracelet, a download on a retreat in India telling him to share his healing, and a best friend’s dinner-table insight that what he needed was a daily physical reminder that he is enough. And he closes with the two things he believes he came here to learn: that he is enough simply because he exists, a feeling that took 47 years and the darkest period of his life to reach, and to slow down, a lesson he takes so seriously he tattooed a snail on his leg. His hope for the year is simple: that enough people wear the bracelet that the message becomes much bigger than his story.
Ariane de Bonvoisin interviews remarkable people across business, arts, entertainment, finance, personal development, sports, tech, and beyond about a side of their lives they rarely discuss: their spiritual path.
